Bootcamp Learning Plan

What is my long term goal and/or career pathway?

My long-term goal is to gain some knowledge and develop a new skill by studying with Dev Academy so that I'm able to make a career out of programming. I'm hoping to gain basic skills and knowledge that I'm able to build on as well as learning ways of troubleshooting, problem-solving and more. Once I leave Dev Academy, it's a goal of mine to be successful one day, to make a difference but also to make an honest living.

What do you think your biggest strengths and limitations will be in Bootcamp?

For my learning plan in sprint 2, I put that one of my strengths would be determination and I still agree with this. I feel as though my determination has been put to the test so far, but I still don't like to leave anything unfinished so alas, I'm still here. I originally put that my weakness was that I tend to skim read and I noticed this one slowing down my progress a lot as I still kept falling into the trap of doing this.

What do you think your biggest non-technical challenge at Bootcamp will be?

I think my biggest challenge will be working in groups/presenting to groups. I love teamwork, but I worry about being the one to hold the group back/be slower than others. It's difficult for me to ask for help for fear of annoying people or slowing others down.

What non-technical skills - human skills - would I like to see developed in yourself while at Dev Academy?

I'd like to see improvement in my weaknesses. Cause it can never hurt to work on things that slow you down and improve on them. I'd also like to see an improvement in my self-awareness as I think this would help in a lot of other aspects such as teamwork, being less afraid to ask for help, etc.

What are your expectations from the Bootcamp team?

I suppose something similar to what we've been receiving now with the Foundations/Facilitation team. Being provided with timely answers, great resources and patience above all else. I've experienced this so far, so only hope that it continues.

What are my expectations of myself on Bootcamp?

Based on what I know about Bootcamp, I'll definitely be messaging people a lot more often than now. During Foundations, I've had the time to sit and stew on a problem until I can solve it on my own (mostly), but it sounds like there is limited time in Bootcamp so my first point of call for help (besides Google) will be my Facilitator or my cohort for sure.

I'll most likely manage my workload by writing down a to-do list and crossing things off as I go to make sure nothing is missed. If I fall behind, I will ask for help so that no one else is accidentally slowed down in the process when it comes to the group work.

Foundations Learning Plan

What is your long term goal or career pathway?

A long-term goal of mine would ultimately to be successful. My definition of success will definitely change over the years depending on what I can achieve, but for now it means to try my best, find a career that I enjoy and have opportunity for work-life balance.

A description of your strengths and limitations when it comes to learning

A strength would be determination. I don’t like to leave things unfinished. A weakness would be that sometimes I tend to skim read rather than take in important facts.

What skills (non-technical core/human skills) would you like to see developed in yourself while at Dev Academy?

I think learning something new like this at Dev Academy, as well as having to hold myself accountable and keep trying over and over again will definitely help with my patience and I think it’s a great quality to develop as studies continue.

A commitment to how you will manage your workload in this programme. This should include:

I like to keep a diary and each day, I list my tasks for the day so I can cross them off as I go and I’m not left wondering if I’ve forgotten something. When it comes to preventing a build-up, I think my route for this would be to ensure that if there’s more than 2 tasks left over from the day before, I would either need to put in longer hours or simply ask for help before things get too bad or hectic.

A commitment as to how and where you will seek help in a timely way

My first point of call is Google, then my next point of call is any Facilitator. I know it’s recommended to spend about 20 minutes on a problem but I tend to have many breakthroughs after 45 minutes or so, and I like the feeling of having figured it out myself as I feel it cements in my brain more. However, I do enjoy talking and messaging with the Facilitators so it’s not a difficult thing to do.

A description of what you expect from the Facilitation team

Nothing more than what they already provide. They provide timely answers, great resources and a lot of patience. from what I have seen and also experienced first-hand.

Any scheduling information such as block-out times when you are committed to other things. For example, you might have whānau commitments like school drop-offs. It's important to plan these in.

I spend time with friends and family on weekends where possible, but other than that, I usually plan my appointments around work or study.
